Yogyakarta - Borobudur & Prambanan Temple

Jogjakarta/Yogyakarta - pronounced as "Jogh-Jah-Kar-Ta"

Main attractions in Jogja that you should definitely visit are Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple as both are on UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Both places are about 1 hour++ away from the Malioboro, main city in Jogja, so highly recommend to hire a transport to get to these places. It's not necessary to book your tour/hire a transport before your arrival as there's plenty of hire services in every corner of Jogja.

I stayed at Ibis Styles @ Malioboro and book my tours and hired my car directly through the hotel. The prices don't vary that much from outside, so book one that's most convenient for you.

Borobudur

I highly recommend to hire a tour guide when at Borobudur. It's interesting to listen to the history of the temple and also the story of Buddha. There's a fee imposed for hiring a guide, but it'll be worth it to understand the meaning of how the temple was built.

Prambanan Temple

We didn't hire a guide at Prambanan, as it was our first temple visit and we were rather lost and just meaninglessly walked around. We learned our lesson and hired a tour guide at Borobudur.

We were warned of the hot weather, but we were pretty lucky that it has been cloudy; hence, it wasn't much a problem being outdoors for the whole day.

Mount Merapi

Another attraction that we had time to visit is the Mount Merapi. It's one of the still active volcano in the world. It last erupted in 2010.

We booked the sunrise Jeep tour which we had to wake up at 4am for pickup to the base of Merapi. Then we took a jeep ride up a hill that had a nice view of the Mount Merapi and also of the sun. Unfortunately, it was a super cloudy day and we saw nothing -_-

Ah well... but we had a good tour of the history of the tragedies from the volcano eruption.

To further enhance your experience in Jogja, take the "beca" to explore the town.
